Shots fired in Etten-Leur; suspect turns self in

A young man firing a shot during an argument on Deken Koopmanslaan in Etten-Leur on Thursday afternoon, had the street on lockdown for hours. Armed police officers surrounded the home they believed the man to be hiding in and were still trying to make contact when the 22-year-old turned himself in at a police station some three hours later, BN De Stem reports.

The 22-year-old man quarreled with someone on the street around 3:00 p.m., local residents told the newspaper. He headbutted the other person and fired a shot. The police were called.

Around 3:30 p.m. armed police officers surrounded the suspect's home on Deken Koopmanslaan, where he lives with his mother. She wasn't home at the time. Officers searched the neighborhood and found no sign of the suspect, leading them to believe that he was inside the house. A negotiator was called in and for hours the police tried to make contact. A SWAT team was eventually called in to force their way into the home.

While the SWAT team was still on its way, the police received a message that they could pack up. Around 6:30 p.m. the 22-year-old man turned himself in at a police station and was arrested.

What exactly happened on the street that afternoon is not yet clear. No one was injured, as far as is known.
