Quarter of Dutch hotels face competition from Airbnb

Airbnb and other home-sharing sites like Wimdu and HomeAway cause stress for the owners of traditional hotels, bed and breakfasts and campsites in the Netherlands, according to a survey by Statistics Netherlands. The survey showed that a quarter of Dutch accommodation owners experience competition from home sharing.

As can be expected, the experienced competition is greatest in the larger, tourist attracting cities. In Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and The Hague nearly a third of accommodation owners deal with competition from house sharing sites. In Maastricht 36 percent of accommodation owners deal with this competition.

A quarter of hotels say they feel the competition, as do 13 percent of bed and breakfasts, 6 percent of campsites and 4 percent of group accommodations. According to Statistics Netherlands, medium sized hotels, with between 20 and 100 sleeping spaces, in particular feel competitive pressure.
