Fourteen years in prison for Amsterdam repeat rapist
A 35-year-old man from Purmerend was sentenced to 14 years in prison on Tuesday for raping three young women in Amsterdam over a period of four days early last year. The Public Prosecutor demanded 12 years in prison for what she called "unusually humiliating rapes", Het Parool reports.
The court did not impose psychiatric treatment on Mustafa A. because experts could not determine whether he suffered from a mental illness or delayed development.
A. denied involvement in the rapes. But the court found the evidence convincing that it was he who raped the young women "in an extremely rough and humiliating way". A.'s DNA was found on the clothes of the victims and several witnesses recognized him from camera footage of a cellphone store in Amsterdam West where he tried to sell one of his victims' stolen phone. According to the court, A. "never for a moment considered the feelings of his victims."
The court gave A. a longer sentence than the Prosecutor demanded due to the "brutal" way in which he attacked the young women. He was very violent and the victims feared for their lives. He raped some of his victims more than once, and in two cases did not use a condom.
The age of the victims was also taken into account in the sentencing. All three women were between the ages of 20 and 26 when they were attacked. They were severely traumatized by what happened to them. According to the court, A. robbed them of their carefree lives. The fact that A. was caught months after the rapes also caused "an extra period of insecurity and fear" for the victims.
The rapes happened on January 28th, 30th and 31st. On January 28th a man pulled a young woman from her bicycle on H.J.E Wenckebachweg and raped her. Two days later another young woman was raped in her apartment building's elevator. And a day after that the suspect raped his third victim at Sloterplas.
