Bullets fly through another Amsterdam coffeeshop

The Yin Yang coffeeshop in the Spaarndammerbuurt in Amsterdam was targeted in a shooting during the early hours of Thursday morning. Bullet holes were found in the window when people started going to work on Thursday morning. No one was injured, a police spokesperson confirmed to Het Parool.

A local resident told the newspaper that three loud bangs woke him up around 4:00 a.m. "I thought of shots, but saw that it was so quiet on the street. A couple of students cheerily cycled by, so I thought it must've been something else. There was no corpse on the street after all", he said.

Last year 10 Amsterdam coffeeshops were targeted in shootings. The mayor's policy was to close a coffeeshop down for at least three months after a shooting, in the interest of public order and the safety of local residents. But that policy changed in November last year. The municipality stated that "it can not be ruled out that there is a relationship between the closure policy and the increase in the number of shootings." Rivals may shoot at a coffeeshop to have it closed, for example.
