Amsterdam museum finds early Kazimir Malevich sketch of "An Englishman in Moscow"

The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam discovered an unknown sketch by Russian artist Kazimir Malevich. The sketch seems to be an early version of the 1914 painting An Englishman in Moscow, one of the top Malevich pieces the museum has in its collection, Het Parool reports.

The sketch was discovered by Geurt Imanse - former head of collections at the Stedelijk Museum and an expert in Russian avant-garde - during research into the Khardziev collection. It was found between the pages of a book written by literature scientist and art collector Nikolai Khardzhiev about artist Pavel Fedotov.

The Khardziev collection is a collection of Russian avant-garde art and art-historical literature that belonged to Nikolai Khardzhiev, who died in 1996. The Stedelijk Museum cares for the collection.

The newly discovered drawing will be on public display for the first time from June 2nd, in honor of the Khardzhiev symposium held in the museum on June 2nd and 3rd.
