Free entrance to new sculpture garden in the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam will unveil a new sculpture garden on Saturday in honor of Amsterdam's 750th anniversary. The covered garden will return to the site of the previous sculpture garden, in the current entrance area of the museum. To celebrate the arrival of the garden, all exhibitions in the museum will be free to visit on Saturday.

The new sculpture garden is freely accessible during the day and can be seen in the evening behind an illuminated glass facade on the Museumplein. It features both early modern sculptures and contemporary art, including work by Henry Moore, Alexander Calder and a loan from Damien Hirst.

"Until the turn of the century, the sculpture garden was a popular and frequently visited place in Amsterdam," the museum said. "With the opening of this new indoor sculpture garden, the museum is once again striving to offer visitors an inspiring space where everyone can meet each other, and the art."

On Saturday, in addition to free admission, there will also be a program of festive activities, such as workshops, a book market and tours in and around the building and a performance by rapper and musician Sef.

The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam is one of the best-known museums for modern and contemporary art and design in the Netherlands. Since 2017, the museum has held a large permanent exhibition with more than 750 works from its own art collection, showing developments in modern art from the end of the 19th century to the present day. It covers art movements such as Bauhaus, CoBrA, De Stijl and Pop Art, with works by well-known artists such as Karel Appel, Marc Chagall, Marlene Dumas, Paul Cezanne and Vasily Kandinsky.
