Airbnb guests in Amsterdam doubles to 1.7 million overnights

The number of Airbnb bookings in Amsterdam grew by 125 percent over the past year - last year almost 1.7 million overnight stays in the Dutch capital were booked through the home sharing site, according to research by property adviser Colliers International and Hothelschool The Hague. In 2016 Airbnb held 10.7 percent of Amsterdam's overnight housing market, double the 5.4 percent it held in 2015, NOS reports.

The average price of an overnight stay in an Airbnb apartment in Amsterdam increased from 136 euros to 140 euros. The price for a room increased from 86 euros to 92 euros and the price for a shared room from 62 euros to 84 euros. The number of apartments and rooms available in Amsterdam more than doubled, from over 15 thousand at the end of 2015 to over 32 thousand at the end of 2016.

Some 35 percent of all Amsterdam accommodations offered on Airbnb, were offered by people who have several apartments or rooms listed on the site. According to the researchers, this indicates that at least part of the offer is in the hands of professionals instead of individuals.

The Hague is the city with the second most Airbnb business in the Netherlands. Last year there were 126 thousand Airbnb overnight stays in the city, accounting for a market share of 7.2 percent. Though that is still less than a tenth of the Amsterdam overnight stays. Rotterdam comes in third place with 116 thousand Airbnb overnight stays, accounting for 6.5 percent of the Rotterdam overnight housing market.

The researchers did not use figures from Airbnb itself. They gathered data from company AirDNA, which "scrapes" data together from the Airbnb website on a daily basis.
