Terrorist attacks: Dutch need to learn what to do in a crisis says Red Cross

More than half of Dutch don't know what to do if they are caught in a terrorist attack, or think that they will respond incorrectly, according to research by the Red Cross. Of the 700 Dutch the Red Cross questioned, 55 percent don't feel confident to give first aid, RTL Nieuws reports.

The Red Cross asked respondents whether they would immediately give help or immediately get to safety if they witnessed an attack. When children are involved, 75 percent would go help immediately and 50 percent when only adults are involved. This is wrong, according to the organization. "In an attack or other crisis, your own safety is of vital importance", the Red Cross said. "Only if you yourself are safe can you save the lives of others."

The Red Cross set up a webpage with Do's and Don'ts when you are in the midst or aftermath of an attack. It starts with taking a deep breath and getting your emotions under control, then getting yourself to safety. Then see if you can get a victim to safety, moving him by dragging him by the ankles, not the upper body. Then call the emergency services and provide first aid. More detailed instructions can be found here.
