Video: One person killed in houseboat fire in Amsterdam-West

A person died early Saturday morning after a fire on a houseboat at the Geuzenkade in De Baarsjes in Amsterdam-West. Emergency services deployed a trauma helicopter and police forensic units to the scene along a canal.

Police said the fire was reported just before 5 a.m. Firefighters, police, and ambulance crews responded immediately. The victim was removed from the boat shortly after responders arrived.

First aid was given at the scene but was unsuccessful. The person was pronounced dead. Authorities have not yet identified the victim. They also said it remains unclear whether the person was a resident of the boat.

Police Team Transport Amsterdam responded during the night shift at the request of the Gemeenschappelijke Meldkamer Amsterdam. Officers brought a calamities container to the Geuzenkade. Officers also set up a screening tent to allow emergency services and forensic investigators to carry out their work. “We wish the next of kin strength in this difficult time,” said Police Team Transport Amsterdam in a statement.
