Video: Explosion and fire in Eindhoven apartment complex; 3 badly hurt
Three people were seriously injured in a huge fire likely caused by an explosion in an apartment complex in Eindhoven on Thursday evening.
The fire broke out around 9:00 p.m. in a third-floor apartment on Brahmslaan and quickly spread to the fourth floor. The authorities think an explosion on the third-floor apartment’s balcony started the fire. Witnesses told Omroep Brabant that the apartment’s facade “blew out” after a long bang. A large amount of glass was scattered around the complex.
The emergency services responded in large numbers, including multiple fire brigade units, seven ambulances, and two helicopters - one an air ambulance carrying a trauma team and the other a police helicopter surveying the scene from above.
The fire brigade evacuated the building and searched for anyone left behind while fighting the blaze. At 10:28 p.m., the local security region reported that firefighters had the blaze under control.
After extinguishing the fire, the fire brigade inspected the building. Some time after midnight, they allowed residents of the east wing, the ground floor, the first floor, and the second floor to return to their homes. The residents of six apartments on the third and fourth floors could not return. Alternative accommodation was sought for them.
The injured people were taken to the hospital for treatment. Their current condition is unknown. It is still unclear what exactly happened. The police will investigate on Friday, according to Omroep Brabant.
