Romano van der Dussen is suing the Spanish government for 6 million euros in compensation. The Dutch man spent 12 years, or 4,400 days, in seven different Spanish prisons on a wrongful conviction of rape, ANP reports. Van der Dussen was sentenced to 15.5 years in prison by a Spanish court in 2003. After a very lengthy legal battle, he was finally acquitted and released in February. The Dutch man was accused of robbing and raping or attempting to rape three women in Fuengirola, near Malaga. He lived in the are at the time. Van der Dussen was convicted mostly based on witness statements. But a DNA match later showed that the rapist was in fact a Brit currently imprisoned for murder.
