Cops arrested in police leak investigation
Two police officers in Limburg were arrested on Monday on suspicion of leaking confidential information, the Public Prosecutor and Limburg police announced in a joint statement. Another four suspects were arrested on suspicion of involvement in this case.
The police officers in question are a 50-year-old man working in the base team of the Westelijke Mijnstreek and a 25 year old woman working in the base team of Heerlen. The other suspects are three men from Heerlen, aged 34, 35 and 46 years, and a 48-year-old man with no fixed residence.
Suspicions of an information leak in the Limburg police arose during the investigation into the murder of Sven Prins, in which eight suspects were arrested on Monday. After concrete evidence was found that confidential information had fallen into the wrong hands, the police immediately launched in a criminal investigation resulting in these arrests.
The investigation into the nature and extent of the information leak is still ongoing. This includes an investigation into whether the leak holds implications for other ongoing investigations. The two police officers were suspended and their access to the police systems and buildings were revoked.
