Extra security at Schiphol over threat "signal"

Extra security measures implemented around Schiphol airport over the weekend will remain in place for the time being. The extra measures were implemented on Saturday after the authorities received a "signal" about a specific terrorist threat, the Telegraaf reports. "The safety triangle (Mayor, Prosecutor and Police, ed.) on Friday decided on additional measures, both visible and invisible, because of a specific threat signal", Hans Molenaar, Marechaussee colonel, said to the newspaper. "We will take all necessary measures to protect travelers and people who work at the airport." These measures will remain in place "until the triangle makes a different decision". According to the Volkskrant, a "signal" means that there is no concrete evidence that an attack is planned and no specific suspect in the picture. The municipality of Haarlemmermeer was vague in their statement about the threat, like the Amsterdam municipality was about a similar signal around the dace party Sensation earlier this year. Extra measures at Schiphol includes the Koninklijke Marechaussee - a policing force that works as a branch of the military and is responsible for airport security - doing extra traffic checks on the approach to the airport, and dozens of heavily armed units performing surveillance at the airport itself.
