German border levee holds, but more storms on the way

The heavy rainfalls of the past days put a dike in the German city of Hamminkeln, just across the border from Zevenaar, under so much pressure that it could break at any moment. If the dike in the Issel river is breached it would flood the A12 highway making traffic between Arnhem and Oberhausen impossible, according to broadcaster NOS. So far the dike is holding, despite water levels of 1.8 meters expected in the Issel last night - three times higher than normal. But more stormy weather is on the way, according to meteorological service KNMI. The KNMI issued a code yellow storm warning for all of the Netherlands except Zeeland and the Wadden Islands. The warning is in effect between 2:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. The KNMI warns that the storms will be accompanied by heavy rains, strong winds and hail. Flooding is a definite possibility, as is lightning strikes. "Avoid open water and open areas, do not take shelter under trees. Follow weather reports and warnings", the KNMI writes. Groningen and Drenthe are also dealing with fog banks this morning. The KNMI warns motorists to adjust their speed and keep a safe following distance. The fog should clear up during the morning.
