Two women stabbed, suspect jumps from Utrecht bridge

A man stabbed two women in Utrecht on Sunday night and then tried to commit suicide by stabbing himself and jumping off the Koppel-bridge over the A12, according to the police. The police responded to a report that a woman was stabbed on the Simplonbaan around 11:15 p.m. on Sunday. At the scene they found a that a second woman was also stabbed. The victims told the officers that the perpetrator ran away in the direction of the Koppel bridge and the police launched a search. The suspect was found on the bridge. He threatened to jump onto the highway. A SWAT team was called in and the fire department set up an inflatable cushion to catch the man. According to the police, the suspect would not be reasoned with. After he stabbed himself several times, the SWAT team decided he posed a danger to himself and bystanders and knocked him out using a taser and pepper spray. He landed on the inflatable cushion and was taken to the hospital to have his stab wounds treated. The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the stabbing.
