Fugitive shot at by Amsterdam police in custody

A man who escaped arrest despite targeted police gunfire at his car on Thursday, was found and arrested in Amsterdam-West on Saturday. According to the police the suspect, 18-year-old Luciano D., has a criminal record and is classified as firearm-dangerous. He was injured in the shooting on Thursday. D. was staying in a juvenile detention institution in Lelystad, managed to escape during supervised leave for a funeral in Amsterdam on December 31st. He was sentenced to mandatory psychiatric treatment in the facility on February 15th last year for threats and attempted armed robbery. According to the police, D. is on the Top 600 list in Amsterdam. The list contains perpetrators of High Impact Crime such as robbery and mugging. On January 4th the police called in the special Fugitive Active Search Team (FASTNL) to find and arrest D. Officers found him and stopped his car on a busy Amsterdam road on Thursday. They ordered the four people in the car to get out and fired warning shots when they refused. Three passengers got out, but D. sped away. The police discovered that he was hiding in Amsterdam-West. When he left his hiding place, the FASTNL team followed and arrested him. The FASTNL team was established on January 1st last year. It consists of 35 specially trained police officers that focus on identifying and arresting fugitives. This includes people that still need to serve an sentence of at least 300 days, but also escaped prisoners and people who escaped from mandatory psychiatric treatment. As is standard procedure whenever the police fire their guns, the Rijksrecherche is investigating the shooting. The Rijksrecherche is the department that handles internal investigations at the police.
