Weather alerts lifted, but slick roads may remain

Dutch meteorological office KNMI terminated its warnings for icy roads in the northeast of the country. The weather office was joined by motorist association ANWB and infrastructure agency Rijkswaterstaat in calls for drivers to stay off the roads in the provinces of Friesland, Groningen and Drenthe. Millions of kilograms of salt were used this week to reduce the amount of ice on freeways. While the highways are open, local roads may still cause problems as the ground is still cold and covered in frost. Despite this, freezing temperatures are still possible overnight in the east, with the potential to cause slippery roads and sidewalks, weather website Weeronline.nl wrote. Officially, the only weather warning still in effect is for high winds. A code yellow alert was issued by the KNMI for the Frisian Islands and Wadden Sea area, where winds could peak at 90 kilometers per hour. The alert is set to expire at 11 a.m. on Friday.
