Fireworks attack on Jewish family included anti-Semitic shouting; Amsterdam mayor to respond

A fireworks attack on a Jewish family in Amsterdam over New Year's has politicians concerned, both on a local and national level. A spokesperson for Mayor Eberhard van der Laan stated that the mayor finds the attack "terrible" and that he will respond in more detail during the general meeting on Thursday, Het Parool reports. The family's house and they themselves were pelted with fireworks on New Year's Eve. One of the daughters and the mother of the family were outside when the attack started, they told AT5. Three youths first shouted "Happy New Year" and then "free Palestine" while throwing firecrackers at them, and then at the house and in the mail box. They also beat on the door and windows while shouting "cancer Jews". One of the daughters posted a picture of the broken door on Facebook along with the text: "Last night, a few teens decided their celebrations are not complete without some hatred. While yelling 'cancer Jews' and 'free Palestine' they kicked our doors and windows." VVD councilor Dilan Yesilgoz intends to ask about this in the general affairs commission on Thursday. "I want to know more about this from the mayor", he said to Het Parool. "I understand that the family first did not want to report it because they are afraid of escalation. That seems to me like a world upside down." Parliamentarians Louis Bontes and Joram van Klaveren also submitted parliamentary questions on the matter.
