Proost! Woman-owned microbrewery makes waves with Kutbier

Woman-owned microbrewery Boegbeeld has taken the Netherlands by storm. Their Kutbier is so popular that the first batch, consisting of a few thousand bottles, was sold out within days. "We are still getting a lot of messages about buying Kutbier. And we are very happy with it. At this time it really is completely sold out," brewers Janneke Pieters and Mary-Jane Snelders write on their Facebook page. "We will have beer again in early December." Kutbier is named in honor of what the two lady brewers call the "Bossche Kut". Translated to English, the word "Kut" is literally "cunt". The Dutch also use the word in a variety of ways, including as an adjective meaning "bad" or "worthless", and as a curse exclaimed in anger, similar to how English speakers would use the word "shit". The label of the beer bottle describes the Bossche Kut by saying, "She dyes her hair ideally in the most unnatural color possible. She wears much makeup and draws her eyebrows as she wishes. When she tears by on her Tomos [scooter] all the men yell out in Bosch, 'Looks good, kut!' Kutbier is a tribute to her and to the jewel of the Bosch language." The website describes the Kutbier as "a spicy blonde beer named after the spirited character of the Den Bosch Cunt! But inside Bosch people have a soft heart. This sweet character can be found in the sweet taste of dried plums." Those interested in trying the now infamous Kutbier, will unfortunately have to wait until December, as the first batch is completely sold out. Progress on the next batch can be followed on the Boegbeeld Facebook page.
