Film distributor also targeting Popcorn Time users
The Dutch film distributor, Dutch Filmworks, is planning to go after individual Dutch Popcorn Time users and demand compensation for damages done. Spokesperson for the company Peter de Haan told broadcaster NOS that the intention is to approach users either this year or next. Popcorn Time allows user to watch movies and TV series without paying.
Dutch Filmworks has no particular movie in mind as to where they want to start, and have noted that they find small films as important as big ones.
To be able to go after individual users, Dutch Filmworks will need help from internet service providers, as they can connect IP addresses to users physical addresses.
Internet provider Ziggo stated that it will not be releasing this information. “A judge may make a decision on this, we won't do it.” a spokesperson said to the broadcaster. Service provider KPN was not available for comment.
De Haan told the broadcaster that they won't give up if the ISP's refuse their request, but will go to the court in a larger context by teaming up with other distributors or the trade association.
Legal experts agree that much depends on the judge, with some speculating examples to be made of those who have used the site for extensive downloading.
