Video: Eindhoven university elevator collapse kills worker

One person was killed and another wounded when an elevator fell inside a building on the TU/Eindhoven campus. The elevator fell seven stories and trapped both victims, believed to be workers taking part in the building’s renovations, according to Omroep Brabant. The fire department chief at the scene, Tim Bosmans, told reporters that the two men were standing on top of the elevator when it came crashing down. The lift was not believed to be in use at the time. The accident happened before 4 p.m. on Friday, and a call to emergency services brought rescuers, paramedics, a trauma helicopter and police to the scene. Firefighters rescued one victim at about 4:30 p.m. He was transported by ambulance to an area hospital. His condition is not known. The official social affairs and employment watchdog Inspectorate SZW is investigating the tragedy. Renovations at the 16-story vacated building will turn it into 300 residencies for students and foreign researchers, the Telegraaf reported.
