Five people convicted in Schilderswijk riots

On Tuesday the police court in The Hague convicted 5 men of committing acts of violence during the third night of rioting in Schilderswijk, The Hague two weeks ago. They were all sentenced to a combination of prison time and community service. Most of them also received a location ban for Schilderswijk. A total of 7 suspects appeared in court on Tuesday. The first suspect was found guilty of the violent act of throwing a stone at a riot police van and participating in the riots. He was sentenced to 42 days in prison, 32 of which suspended, 60 hours of community service and a 6 month location ban for Schilderswijk. The second suspect threw a rock at a police car. He was sentenced to 42 days in prison, 31 of which suspended, community service of 50 hours and a 5 month location ban for Schilderswijk. The third suspect was convicted for overt violence against a riot police bus and the people in it. He was given a 42 prison sentence, 31 days of which suspended, and 80 hours of community service. The fourth man was found guilty of overt violence by throwing a stone at a police vehicle. He was sentenced to 42 days in prison, 32 of which suspended and 60 hours of community service. This man was not given a location ban as his work as a taxi driver makes this impossible. The 5th man was given 30 days in jail, 20 of which suspended and a 6 month location ban for Schilderswijk for threatening police officers. The court also ruled that the men do not have to pay damages as it is difficult to establish the exact proportion fo damage the men caused to the riot police van and police vehicle.
