D66 MP resigns; to lead pharma firm

D66 parliamentarian Gerard Schouw is leaving politics after 25 years of being active for the D66. From August 1st this year he will be the CEO of Nefarma, the Dutch Association for Innovative Medicines, the party announced on their website. Schouw has been a Member of Parliament for the past 12 years, 7 of which he was member of the Eerste Kamer - Cabinet - and the last 5 he was a member of the Tweede Kamer - lower house of parliament. He was also the national party chairman twice, council member and alderman in Dordrecht. "After having worked in public administration for 25 years, it is now time for business life." Schouw said. "The D66 is in good shape, we have more members than ever and the polls are favorable. This is then also a good time to start something new. But that I am going to miss politics is a certainty." Party leader Alexander Pechtold stated that the D66 is losing a very experienced and versatile politician who is invaluable to the party. "Gerard played a major role in the growth and development of the D66 party after reaching a low in 2006." Pechtold said. "It is understandable that he wants a new step after so many years in politics, this time outside politics. Nevertheless, I see him go with a heavy heart. On behalf of the D66, I thank him for all his work in the many roles he has held for the party."
