Terror suspect Mohammed G. released from custody

The court in Maastricht released 26 year old suspected terrorist Mohammed G. from custody on Wednesday. The Public Prosecutor is considering an appeal against the release. According to his lawyer, Serge Weening, G. spent two weeks in the special security prison in Vught on suspicion of attempted participation in a criminal organization, without there being any evidence for it, AD reports. "The evidence that was given is that he has a beard of four weeks and is wearing a long black robe", Weening said. "There was also AIVD information that he wanted to go to Syria or Libya. That is all allowed, it is not evidence of terrorism." The lawyer also called it a "disgrace" that Dutch law treats Muslims in this "stigmatizing" way. Mohammed G. was arrested on April 29th on suspicion of participating and contributing to training for terrorist acts. According to the Public Prosecutor, G. can face a prison sentence of up to 8 years on these charges. A spokesperson for the Public Prosecutor told AD that G. remains a suspect despite his release.
