A total of 112 terrorist attacks were committed in Western countries over the past 15 years. Three quarters of these happened in the last five years, a strong increase related to the rise of terrorist organization Islamic State since 2014, according to an analysis by Dutch intelligence and security service AIVD. The number of attacks decreased again since the fall of Islamic State, NOS reports.

Dutch intelligence and security service AIVD is investigating whether Chinese technology company Huawei has been involved in espionage in the Netherlands, due to concerns that the company has a hidden backdoor to customer data at one the Netherlands' three largest telecom providers - VodafoneZiggo, KPN or the merger of T-Mobile and Tele2, the Volkskrant reports.

The AIVD would not comment to Volkskrant questions about the investigation. Telecom providers also refuse to respond or are unaware of an investigation by the intelligence service.

The number of adult Dutch currently in Syrian-Kurdish camps or detention centers increased to 55 over the past month, according to new figures from intelligence service AIVD. Three quarters of them are women. They have a total of 85 children with them, some of whom they took with them from the Netherlands, the rest were born in Syria, NOS reports.

According to the service, "radical Islamic boosters" play an increasingly emphatic role in the education offer for young Muslims in the Netherlands. In the long term, this could undermine the democratic legal order, the AIVD said, NOS reports.

The police arrested a 23-year-old man in Breda on suspicion of involvement in terrorism. According to information from intelligence service AIVD, he joined Islamic terrorist movement al-Shabaab in Somalia in 2017 and was also trained by the Al-Qaeda affiliated group, the Public Prosecutor said.

It is believed that the man returned to the Netherlands late last year, according to the Prosecutor. The authorities recently determined that he was staying in Breda and arrested him.

The controversial British Sharia preacher Haitham Al Haddad gave "covert" lessons at the Cornelius Haga Lyceum in Amsterdam, newspaper NRC reported on Friday based on a confidential official message that intelligence service AIVD sent to mayor Femke Halsema of Amsterdam in January. 

The message also says that other radical Islamic people were also involved in the school and that the school management funded a Chechen terrorist movement, according to the newspaper.

Minister Ferdinand Grapperhaus of Justice and Security, intelligence service AIVD and national coordinator for counterterrorism and security NCTV have major concerns about Islamic school Cornelius Haga Lyceum in Amsterdam. In a letter to parliament and Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema, they wrote that there are indications that the board of the school has been in contact with a terrorist group for years, RTL Nieus reports.

A 48-year-old man from Groningen was arrested in the Overijssel town of De Lutte last week for preparing a terrorist crime, the Public Prosecutor announced on Wednesday. The police launched an investigation into the man after information from intelligence service AIVD that the man adheres to ISIS ideology.

According to CTIVD, the regulator for the Dutch intelligence services AIVD and MIVD, there are major risks that the two services will act in violation of the new Intelligence and Security Law because guarantees that they will do so are lacking or not properly regulated. As a result the AIVD and MIVD themselves don't know themselves whether they're acting in line with the law, NOS reports.

The Netherlands has approximately 500 jihadists and several thousand sympathizers of jihadist ideology, general intelligence service AIVD said in a report published on Monday. "They pose a potential threat. The threshold for committing an attack in the name of Islamic State or Al Qaeda seems to have decreased", the AIVD said, NU.nl reports.

While this group seldom resorts to physical violence, the AIVD is concerned about the climate arising in the Netherlands, NU.nl reports.

Two men were arrested in Rotterdam on June 17th on suspicion of planning attacks in the Netherlands and France, the Public Prosecutor announced on Monday. The suspects are 22 and 27 years old, and both of Moroccan nationality. They were arrested based on information from intelligence agency AIVD, the Prosecutor said.

At least six Dutch are active on an online misogyny platform incels.me - a platform for frustrated men with sometimes radical ideas that preaches violence, Trouw reports based on its own research.

"Incels" stands for "involuntarily celibate". The platform recently received large amounts of attention, after one if its members - Canadian Alek Minassian - killed 10 people in Toronto last week. The men who call themselves 'incels' consider women as cold beings who are responsible for their suffering, because they do not pay them enough, or any, attention, according to the newspaper.

On Monday the police arrested four Dutch-Moroccan men on suspicion of involvement in terrorism. The men discussed an attack on the Turkish consulate in Rotterdam, the Public Prosecutor said in a statement.

A majority in the Tweede Kamer is satisfied with the changes the government wants to make to the new law for the intelligence and security services. In addition to coalition parties VVD, CDA, D66 and ChristenUnie, opposition parties GroenLinks, PvdA and SGP also agree with the changes, was revealed in a parliamentary debate on the law on Tuesday, NOS reports.

The government's plans on how to change the new law for the Dutch intelligence services after a majority voted against it in a referendum, leaked on Thursday night. The changes are "mostly cosmetic" and don't do justice the results of the advisory referendum, according to privacy organization Bits of Freedom, NOS reports.

The four parties in the Dutch government are willing to consider adapting the new law for the intelligence and security services. Responsible Minister Kasja Ollongren of Home Affairs will soon present a number of proposals for amendments, sources told BNR.

A majority of Dutch voted against the new law for the Dutch intelligence and security services, the Electoral Council officially announced on Thursday. In total 49.4 percent voted against the law, 46.5 percent voted for it, and 4 percent cast a blank vote, NU.nl reports.

52 percent of Dutch voters voted in the referendum, far above the 30 percent minimum turnout required for the referendum to be valid.

Intelligence service AIVD is careless about privacy when sharing information with foreign services in the search for suspected terrorists, concludes the supervisory committee on the Dutch intelligence services CTIVD. Additional measures are required, the committee said in a report, ANP reports.
