Dutch Intelligence Service launches 2025 holiday puzzle challenge

The Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) has released its 2025 holiday puzzle, inviting both adults and youths to test their problem-solving skills. The annual puzzle, considered one of the most challenging of the year, is open to individuals and teams. The top scorer will receive a trophy and “eternal fame,” the agency said.

All puzzles are created by AIVD employees in their free time and feature a series of cryptic tasks. In addition to the adult version, the AIVD introduced a junior edition in 2019 for participants aged 12 to 15. While anyone can attempt it, only those 15 or younger are eligible to appear on the leaderboard.

The first copy of the puzzle was handed to Brankele Frank, a neurobiologist and recent winner of the Dutch quiz show De Slimste Mens. Frank said, “One of the most enjoyable things in life is making puzzles. You can really make your prefrontal cortex work, and you feel all those gears clicking into place. Now that I’m the smartest person, maybe I can finally solve the AIVD holiday puzzle!”

For participants who are stuck, Frank suggested physical activity: “Make sure to get moving, for example, by dancing. Your body releases certain hormones that make you alert. This might help you see things differently and even gain new insights.”

The AIVD encouraged participants to enjoy the challenge, wishing everyone “good luck and happy puzzling.”

Both the adult and junior puzzles are available for download on the AIVD’s holiday puzzle webpage, which also offers access to past editions. Participants must submit their answers by Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.
