Police shoot man at asylum seeker squat

Police in Amsterdam shot a 34-year-old man in the leg early Thursday morning after he allegedly lunged towards officers with a knife. The shooting took place in the "Vluchttoren," a nickname given to a squatted building on Jan Tooropstraat used as a shelter for failed asylum seekers and undocumented immigrants. Officers arrived on scene just before 1 a.m., after receiving a report of a stabbing in the building, when they saw the suspect with the knife. Another man, 28, was at the location with injuries to his hands and feet. "The [suspect] did not respond to police warnings from the police, whereupon he was shot in the leg," a police report stated. His condition was not released. First responders transferred the 28-year-old to an area hospital. Police then placed two more suspects into custody, aged 32 and 56, releasing them after questioning. An internal affairs division is investigating the shooting.
