Suspected jihadist, 21, arrested in the Hague

Police on Tuesday arrested a 21-year-old man from his home in The Hague on suspicion of taking part in terrorist training camps. The arrest comes as part of a large-scale investigation into jihadi activity in the Netherlands, during which 49 people identified as suspected jihadists have had their passports withdrawn and several arrest warrants issued.

The suspect has been placed under heavy restrictions meaning that he can only make outside contact with his lawyer. He will be brought before a magistrate on Friday.

The arrest comes a day after a judge ruled that 20-year-old Mahar H, in custody on terrorist-related charges following his return from Syria, must remain in custody until his trial scheduled in November. Judges said on Monday there is a strong risk the man will either return to Syria or will try to encourage others to fight for terrorist organisations. An 18-year-old man has also been told that he will remain in jail while the investigation into claims that he encouraged people to take part in jihad are ongoing.

Roughly 140 people have lost their Dutch passports since the Netherlands began using the punishment to clamp down on domestic jihadism.
