Inquest into dozens of jihadists begins
Returned fighters in the ongoing Syrian crisis have become the focus of a criminal investigation by the Public Prosecution Authority (OM). "Several dozen" Jihadis, recruiters and others are being investigated, according to Minister Ivo Opstelten of Security and Justice.
These foreign Syria fighters are being criminally reproached because of their role in making the armed resistance abroad a possibility, Minister Opstelten has told Parliament, after questions from the PVV.
"At the moment there are several dozen returnees, (potential) travelers, recruiters and facilitators part of a criminal investigation."
According to De Telegraaf, around 30 fighters have already returned to The Netherlands after traveling to the crisis area for Jihad. Dutch intelligence service AIVD has recorded the threat level to society for every one of these Jihadists, while the OM calculates the possibility of criminal persecution. Agreements are made with municipalities about decreasing the possible threat.
