WappZapp going after Netflix in NL
Netflix NL, who was the first video-on-demand (VOD) provider up until now, will soon have company and competition from WappZapp. Starting April the new VOD provider will also offer unlimited films and series for the same €7,99 a month.WappZapp offered free video's from public sources such as 'Uitzending Gemist' and YouTube, but the provider has decided to expand its services.
Contracts with A-Film Benelux, BBC, and IDFA are either already signed of in the making. The app is aiming for 1,500 Oscar-winning movies, European series, documentaries from around the world, and detectives. People are allowed a two-week trial period before deciding. Similar to Spotify, which enables people to stream music without limits, Netflix and WappZapp also offer the same for films, in an attempt to draw people to use their services instead of using illegal download sites, such as The Pirate Bay. Since its start in September 2013, Netflix has gained one million members, but is still not making a profit. Only time will tell if the VOD providers will survive in a market where they have to compete with free alternatives, though not entirely ethical or of the best quality.
