Oranje coach Koeman faces uncertain future after World Cup penalty loss to Morocco
The Dutch knockout from the World Cup has raised questions over Ronald Koeman’s future as coach. The Netherlands was eliminated by Morocco on penalties. The result immediately triggered debate over Koeman’s tactical decisions.
Koeman refused to discuss his position right after the match. He said, “I have my thoughts about that.” He added, “Starting tomorrow, I will think about my future. Now is not the moment for that. Maybe I will have figured it out by tomorrow afternoon. I will put everything in order. I am still too disappointed. May I be?”
Koeman’s contract is set to expire after his 64th match in charge of the national team. The stated goal for the World Cup was a semifinal finish or better, but the Netherlands exited in the round of 16. The next international fixture is scheduled for Sept. 24 against Germany in the Nations League.
The defeat came during a turbulent period in Dutch football that Koeman first entered in 2018, when the team was rebuilding after missing Euro 2016 and the 2018 World Cup. Key veterans Arjen Robben, Robin van Persie, and Wesley Sneijder had retired, forcing a generational reset.
Koeman’s early tenure included rapid progress with new players such as Frenkie de Jong and Denzel Dumfries. The Netherlands recorded wins over Portugal (3-0), France (2-0), Germany (3-0), and England (3-1) and reached a Nations League final, where Portugal won 1-0. He left in 2020 for FC Barcelona.
After Frank de Boer’s underwhelming Euro 2021 campaign and Louis van Gaal’s exit following a penalty shootout loss to Argentina at the 2022 World Cup, Koeman returned. His second spell has been less consistent, with limited success against top-ranked opponents.
Against Morocco, Koeman switched to a five-defender system. He defended the approach after the match. “If we could replay this match, I would do it again,” he said. “I know how it works. If Morocco does not equalize in stoppage time, I get compliments. Now I will probably be destroyed because we played with five defenders. But you are standing on the sideline. I know my players and I train with them. I really know what we had to improve.”
He explained the tactical change by pointing to earlier defensive problems. “In the group stage we conceded too many chances while we let Frenkie de Jong play as a kind of extra defender. Now I chose Nathan Aké as a real center back. That was necessary. Otherwise we would not even have reached extra time.”
The Netherlands managed only two shots on target in the match. Cody Gakpo scored, and Micky van de Ven came close with a long-range attempt. Morocco controlled much of the game and created more danger throughout.
“Offensively we could have offered more,” Koeman said. “But we were still very close to a win. Then we concede that goal in stoppage time, and in the penalty shootout it also did not go our way. Our goalkeeper Bart saves the first penalty and seems to stop the second as well, but the ball goes in via his heel.”
Player Virgil van Dijk offered a different view, saying, “I think the plan worked.” He added, “It was a very intense match. I think we were solid defensively. They could not really find the free man between the lines. So the plan worked. We scored a good goal. In the end, in stoppage time, you get pushed back and unfortunately concede. Then it becomes penalties; unfortunately we are out.”
The Netherlands scored only twice on target during the match. Morocco equalized in stoppage time with a header from defender Issa Diop after being pushed back late in the game.
Van Dijk did not take a penalty and said his focus was on supporting teammates afterward. “I want to go inside as soon as possible to be with those guys. That is my only thought right now,” he said.
Jan Paul van Hecke said the loss left him drained. “I am completely empty,” he said. He noted the tactical switch to five defenders and said, "In the first half, we did better than the second. It is easy to say afterward that we should have done it differently.”
He also said the match was physically demanding after suffering injuries during the tournament. “It was a physically tough match,” he said. Cody Gakpo’s 72nd-minute goal had put the Netherlands in position to win before the late equalizer forced penalties. “I thought we were solid,” Van Hecke said. “It hurts incredibly that we still gave it away. This is a dream that falls apart.”
