Police make arrest in February assassination outside Zwolle windmill
Police arrested a 51-year-old man from Zwolle on Tuesday on suspicion of involvement in the fatal shooting of a 34-year-old local resident on Vondelkade on the evening of Sunday, February 22, 2026, RTV Oost reports.
The suspect is being held under full restrictions and is only permitted to communicate with his lawyer. As a result, police and the Public Prosecution Service are providing very limited information about his identity, possible motive, or alleged involvement in the killing.
The 34-year-old victim was shot dead on the street on February 22, around 8:00 p.m., near the De Passiebloem oil mill. He died immediately at the scene.
Witnesses reported that two men were seen waiting at the scene for several minutes before shooting the victim and escaping on a dark-colored, license plate–less scooter, believed to be a Piaggio Skipper.
Last week, the RTV Oost crime program Plaats Delict released new surveillance images of the suspects, while police also issued a mass SMS alert in the area. The campaign generated several specific tips, including names of those allegedly involved, ultimately resulting in the arrest of the 51-year-old suspect.
A day after the shooting, the suspected weapon was recovered from a ditch near Steenweteringpad in Zwolle-Zuid, roughly six kilometers away from the location where the killing took place.
A Team Grootschalige Opsporing (TGO) is continuing its investigation into the case. Police say more arrests remain possible and are still seeking three specific witnesses, a female jogger, a cyclist, and a pedestrian, who were in the vicinity on the evening in question.
