Two Amsterdam teens arrested over death of 73-year-old man in Jordaan
Police have arrested two Amsterdam boys, aged 15 and 17, on suspicion of involvement in the death of a 73-year-old man. The man, now identified as Paul Wyber, was discovered Monday evening inside his house on Lijnbaansstraat in the Jordaan neighbourhood of Amsterdam.
The victim’s brother grew suspicious when he could no longer get in touch with him. He involved the man’s daughter, who subsequently contacted the police. He was last seen on April 27.
When officers entered the home at 6:30 p.m., they discovered the man’s body, which may have been there for some time. Investigators quickly began treating the case as a possible crime. Residents in the neighbourhood and a reporter present at the scene told AD that visible blood stains could be seen around the front entrance of the property.
According to local residents speaking to De Telegraaf, the man may have been attacked on King’s Day, April 27. Given the heavy crowds and disorder in the Jordaan that day, neighbours believe he may have addressed someone about urinating in public, after which the situation reportedly escalated out of control.
Police said the suspects were identified through an extensive investigation that included forensic analysis, speaking with local residents, and examining surveillance footage. The boys were arrested in public on Thursday.
A judge later ruled on Friday that both suspects must remain in pre-trial detention under strict restrictions, allowing contact only with their attorney.
