Cold air, strong winds, rain to replace mild weather after weekend warmth
The weather across the Netherlands is set to shift sharply from mild and mostly dry conditions to a colder, more unsettled pattern with increasing wind and rain moving in from Belgium, weeronline reports. Temperatures are expected to fall steadily through Sunday and drop further on Monday, when highs will struggle to reach 10 degrees Celsius, followed by a week of continued chilly, changeable weather.
On Sunday morning, conditions were broadly calm and dry nationwide, with plenty of sunshine and early temperatures already in double digits. By midmorning, temperatures rose to between 12 and 17 degrees, making it suitable for outdoor activities such as walking or cycling. It marks a bright start to Mother’s Day.
By early Sunday afternoon, dry conditions are expected to continue, but cloud cover could increase, particularly in the central and southern regions. The north will retain more sunshine.
Temperatures are to peak early in the afternoon at 13 to 14 degrees in Noord-Holland, around 17 degrees in the center, and locally up to 19 dehrees in the southeast. However, a strengthening northerly wind is expected to begin pushing cooler air into the country, causing temperatures to fall during the afternoon.
By late afternoon, readings are to drop to around 9 degrees in the far north, while parts of Limburg and Noord-Brabant still hold near 17 degrees.
Sunday evening will bring persistent cloud cover across the southern half of the country, while northern areas may see occasional clear spells. Overnight, a large precipitation zone will move in from Belgium, bringing rain to the extreme southeast, the Achterhoek, and parts of Noord-Brabant and Limburg. Elsewhere, conditions will remain dry. Overnight lows will fall to 3–4 degrees in the north and 6–8 degrees in central and southern regions.
Monday will mark a clear transition to colder and more unsettled weather. The day will begin with a mix of sun and clouds and generally dry conditions. Morning temperatures will briefly rise to 11–13 degrees, but scattered showers will move in from the northwest during the morning.
Behind these showers, colder air will spread across the Netherlands. By Monday afternoon, temperatures will not exceed 10 degrees anywhere in the country. Local showers will occur, but there will also be dry and sunny intervals. A strong northwesterly wind will develop and intensify during the afternoon, making conditions feel significantly colder.
Monday evening will bring multiple showers and strong winds. Along the northwestern coast, heavy wind gusts will be possible, while the Wadden Islands may briefly experience storm-force conditions from the northwest, up to Beaufort 8. Winds will gradually ease overnight into Tuesday, with decreasing shower activity.
Tuesday will be slightly calmer but will remain cold for the time of year. Scattered showers will still be possible, though dry periods will dominate and sunshine will appear at times. Winds will be mostly moderate from the west. Temperatures will reach 12–14 degrees, below the seasonal norm of 15–19 degrees.
On Wednesday, isolated showers will continue across the country, alternating with dry spells and occasional sunshine. A moderate to fresh southwest wind will develop, with temperatures reaching 12–15 degrees.
Later in the week, including Ascension Day, conditions will remain cool and changeable. Both Thursday and Friday will bring a high chance of showers, though not all periods will be wet. It will be advisable to monitor rainfall radar updates for outdoor plans. By the weekend, dry periods are expected to become more dominant, and temperatures will gradually begin to rise again.
