Meta restores several Dutch LGBTQ+ accounts after suspensions in Europe

Meta has reinstated several LGBTQ+accounts on its platforms. Over the past few weeks, Meta (Facebook and Instagram) has temporarily suspended several LGBTQ+/queer accounts, mostly in Europe, including the Netherlands. The move has sparked widespread criticism.

Accounts such as The Queer Agenda, Club Church in Amsterdam, and the Amsterdam nightclub Tillatec were unexpectedly taken down or hidden without explanation. The removals appear to be part of a wider set of moderation issues that also impacted LGBTQ+ organisations globally.

Some accounts, including the Queer Agenda and Club Church, have now been reinstated on Instagram, with posts, followers, and photos largely restored intact. However, not all accounts have come back automatically, and the recovery process appears uneven and only partially completed. The account managers say they were given no official notice or explanation for why the accounts were first taken down and later restored. To them, the process feels random and inconsistent.

For many of the affected accounts, this was the second time that they had been taken offline within six months. The Queer Agenda, for instance, was removed in December 2025, later restored, and then taken down again in April 2026.

One of the account administrators for Club Church, Carl Pisters, told Het Parool that the return felt “like going back to a toxic ex.” The reinstatements come after growing pressure from Amsterdam politicians, with a city alderman among those urging Meta to take action on the issue.

“We are happy about it,” said Pisters, “but it doesn’t feel safe. There has been no communication at all, no explanation given, except: you can use your account again.”

Meta hasn’t fully explained what happened, but tech experts suggest a few possible reasons. The company relies more and more on AI for moderating content, and these systems can make mistakes by wrongly flagging or removing posts.

Meta is focusing its moderation more on areas like terrorism, scams, drugs, and sexual exploitation. Because of that, content that sits in a grey area, such as some LGBTQ+ community posts, may be more likely to get flagged or removed by mistake, according to TechCrunch.

Since 2025, users have increasingly reported that Meta labels LGBTQ+ content as “sensitive” or “sexual,” reducing its visibility and sometimes temporarily limiting or removing accounts.

For groups like the Amsterdam club Tillatec, previously based in the De School building, the impact has been major. They lost access to around 40,000 followers overnight, which is their key way of reaching people. Because of Instagram’s instability, clubs and collectives are now turning to alternative channels like WhatsApp, Signal, Telegram, and Pixelfed to stay directly connected with their communities.
