Koningsdag begins nationwide as royal family heads to Dokkum for official celebration

Koningsdag will begin unfolding across the Netherlands on Monday morning with nationwide street markets, city-center celebrations, and large-scale public gatherings with seasonably bright spring conditions.

In Dokkum, Fryslân, the national program will begin with the royal family’s arrival. King Willem-Alexander and his family will be welcomed at the Bonifatiuskapel at about 11 a.m. They will then follow a structured route through the city.

The program will showcase regional culture and community participation, with stops highlighting local traditions, sports demonstrations, historical references to the Elfstedentocht, and performances by residents from across Noardeast-Fryslân. The route will feature themed segments focused on language, heritage, and regional identity before concluding at De Helling with a public gathering, live music, and a ceremonial toast.

Across the country, Koningsdag will be fully underway by the morning hours. In Amsterdam, the free markets will open at sunrise and will rapidly transform the city center into a continuous open-air market.

Major areas, including the Jordaan, Westerpark, Amstelveld, and the NDSM-werf, are set to become densely packed pedestrian zones filled with stalls, food vendors, informal commerce, and street performances. Public transport will operate on reduced and diverted schedules to manage heavy crowd flows.

In The Hague, morning activity will build around cultural programming and open public events, with performances, food stalls, and family-oriented activities expanding through the city center. Festival zones around Lange Voorhout and nearby venues will gradually fill as live entertainment begins and intensifies through the morning.

Arnhem will also see early activation, with designated market areas and festival zones opening across the city center. Road closures and pedestrianized streets are meant to support increasing foot traffic.

Across smaller towns and regional centers, local Koningsdag markets and neighborhood celebrations will begin early, filling public squares and streets with community-led events.

According to weeronline, Koningsdag will begin dry across the Netherlands with a mix of sunshine and high clouds. Early morning temperatures will be low, especially inland, with just a few degrees above freezing, creating a cold start for early markets and outdoor setups.

Through the morning, temperatures will reportedly rise steadily, and conditions will become more comfortable. The south will warm fastest and will feel mild to locally pleasant by late morning, while the north will remain cooler with more cloud cover. Coastal areas will stay slightly fresher.

By midday, most of the country will be dry with a mix of sunshine and light cloud. Winds will remain light, and conditions will be broadly favorable for outdoor celebrations, with the most comfortable weather concentrated in the south and central regions.
