Employee killed in violent robbery of Beverwijk gold exchange office

A man violently robbed the gold exchange office in Beverwijk on Wednesday, killing one of the employees, the police reported on Thursday. The police arrested a 19-year-old local man for the robbery.

The robbery took place at the gold exchange office on Breestraat in Beverwijk at around 3:50 p.m. on Wednesday. The police initially reported that an employee was wounded.

Emergency services sent an ambulance to the scene a few minutes after the robbery, and a medical trauma team was dispatched by helicopter soon after.

Less than half an hour after police arrived on scene, authorities said the suspect in the case biked away from the scene with a red Deka shopper bag. He was estimated to be in his mid-twenties, standing about 1.8 meters in height, with a lightly tanned skin complexion and a slender build. The man was wearing a blue jacket over a grey hooded sweatshirt and track pants.

By 6 p.m., police cancelled the bulletin.

With the help of security camera footage, investigators identified the suspect and arrested the 19-year-old man a short time later, the police reported on Thursday. He is in custody for further investigation.

The police did not reveal any details about how the employee was killed or what weapons were involved. It is also unclear whether the suspect managed to steal anything. Investigators asked witnesses or anyone with relevant camera footage to come forward.

“The police have assigned a family liaison officer to provide support to the relatives,” the police said.
