93 people treated for burns despite fireworks ban at PSV championship celebration

A total of 93 people were treated for burns caused by flares on Tuesday, according to the municipality, even though fireworks were strictly prohibited during the PSV festivities. The injuries were minor first-degree burns, and none of the victims needed to go to the hospital.

Although the municipality had warned that fireworks would be strictly prohibited, numerous red flares were set off on Stadhuisplein as the players appeared on the balcony, with occasional loud explosions. Police earlier confirmed that 17 people were arrested during the championship festivities, including for lighting fireworks.

The 93 burn victims received treatment at Red Cross mobile first-aid stations located on and around Stadhuisplein and the Markt. Most injuries occurred when glowing debris from flares fell into the packed crowd.

During last year’s PSV championship celebration, more than 60 people reportedly sought first aid for burns, according to regional media. This prompted the municipality to introduce a fireworks ban this year. A spokesperson said the ban has had an impact: “The exact quantity of fireworks confiscated at the Markt and Stadhuisplein hasn’t been tallied yet, but it’s several dozen kilos.”

The municipality said the day “went smoothly overall” and that no serious incidents occurred. “We are still assessing how this year’s measures worked and what improvements could be made for future championship celebrations.”
