Sextortion suspect confesses to victimizing dozens of girls online

Those in the Netherlands in life threatening danger should immediately dial 112 for emergencies, and anyone suffering from depression or contemplating suicide can call 113 Zelfmoordpreventie at any time by dialing either 113 or 0800-0113, or by visiting 113.nl.

A 22-year-old man from Spijkenisse, suspected of orchestrating widespread sextortion, admitted in court on Wednesday that he had blackmailed girls. Damian D. was identified after a large-scale American investigation into sextortion. Prosecutors are seeking a nine-year prison term along with compulsory psychiatric treatment at a TBS facility for D.

Psychological evaluations indicate that D. has an autism spectrum disorder. Allegedly unable to engage with girls and women in person, he turned to the internet. He reportedly pressured dozens of girls to send nude photos and then coerced them into sending additional images, threatening to post them online if they refused.

The judge described D. on Wednesday as “calculating and manipulative.” D. acknowledged that he knew his actions were illegal but claimed he had not reflected on their impact. Experts suggest that he is sexually aroused by coercing young women and may suffer from a sexual sadism disorder.

At the hearing, D.’s lawyer requested that the court recognize her client as having reduced criminal responsibility. She further advocated for conditional TBS instead of mandatory TBS, noting that conditional TBS does not involve forced confinement in a clinic. The lawyer explained that experts’ assessment of D.’s lack of “intrinsic motivation” for treatment stems from his “limited communication skills.”

Of the 20 identified victims, nearly all are from other countries, including girls and young women from the United States. One victim is Dutch. Authorities believe there may be another 37 victims, though their identities could not be confirmed. Multiple victims suffered self-harm and suicidal thoughts due to the abuse they endured.

In one instance, D. used social media to recruit someone living near a victim to physically monitor her. He then used the information gathered from this surveillance to coerce her into sending more explicit images. D. admitted to collecting personal details about several victims, including where they attended school, to intimidate them. Most of the victims were teenagers.

The suspect had joined specific Telegram groups where nude images of women and girls were circulated. He claimed that he decided to join after seeing a news report about such groups. “I was curious to see what was in these groups,” he told the judge.

The suspect was flagged in a large U.S. investigation due to his possession of child sex abuse footage. Most of D.’s victims were teenagers. He has confessed to nearly all the allegations made against him by the OM.

The Public Prosecution Service (OM) reports a rise in digital sex crimes. Recently, two men from Arnhem were arrested in a sextortion case. Earlier this year, men from Borculo in Gelderland and Oosterhout in Noord-Brabant appeared in court for similar cases. The OM describes these cases, along with those involving D., as “just the tip of the iceberg.”

The police consider it “highly likely” that there are more victims than the girls already identified. They have therefore launched an online campaign across multiple social media platforms. Victims of D., who used the online alias ‘Turpien,’ are being informed that he is in custody and that support is available to them. Parents are encouraged to discuss online sexual boundaries and risks with their children.
