A2 closure near Vianen sparks second day of traffic chaos as drivers ignore detours
Traffic congestion has returned for a second consecutive day around Vianen, Utrecht, as a closure on the A2 motorway and an earlier crash on the A27 combine to disrupt regional travel and send drivers through local roads in Vianen, Hagestein, and Hoef en Haag, RTV Utrecht reports.
The disruptions stem from ongoing weekend roadworks by Rijkswaterstaat on the A2 between the Everdingen and Oudenrijn interchanges. The southbound carriageway toward Utrecht is closed. At the same time, congestion on the A27 and an earlier accident there have contributed to drivers ignoring official detours, repeating a pattern seen the previous day when queues also formed near ferry crossings in the region.
Rijkswaterstaat says it is carrying out asphalt maintenance on the A2 this weekend and will continue work for the next five weekends. The agency is directing traffic to use the A27 and A12 as designated detour routes, but officials say many motorists are not following those instructions.
Vijfheerenlanden Mayor Sjors Fröhlich said conditions in Vianen are slightly improved from the previous day but warned that nearby villages are still heavily impacted.
“In Vianen it is a bit ‘less bad’ than yesterday, but in Everdingen, Hagestein, and around Hoef en Haag it is almost impossible,” Fröhlich said.
Authorities say navigation apps such as Google Maps are also contributing to the problem by redirecting drivers through smaller towns to avoid highway congestion, which often results in longer delays than staying on the main routes.
Fröhlich urged motorists to follow the recommended detour routes. “People are strongly advised to use the recommended detour route today as well,” he said.
