Traffic around Utrecht gridlocked again due to A2 closure
Traffic around Utrecht is at a standstill again on Friday due to the closure of the A2 between Oudenrijn and the junction Everdingen. As was the case last week, traffic on the A27 is completely gridlocked. The delays were around an hour at 1:30 p.m., a spokesperson for the traffic information organization ANWB said. Traffic is also at a standstill in Nieuwegein. "You can't go anywhere around Utrecht now."
The ANWB advises drivers to go around Utrecht or choose a different travel time. But the A1 from Amsterdam to Amersfoort is also busy, said the ANWB spokesperson. "So people are going around Utrecht, but they still end up in traffic."
Dutch infrastructure Organization Rijkswaterstaat has also said that it is hectic. "We have to call on people again to avoid the Utrecht region. It is busy, really busy on the roads around Utrecht," said a spokeswoman. She also confirmed the busyness in Nieuwegein. "There is a lot of traffic, especially from Nieuwegein, towards the A27."
Measures have been implemented to combat the traffic in Nieuwegein, like the use of traffic wardens. According to a spokesperson, it has not reached the point where food and water are being handed out, which did happen last week.
The motorway A2 of Utrecht towards Den Bosch has been closed since 9 p.m. on Thursday for road works. This includes replacing asphalt and carrying out maintenance. The construction will take place up till the end of September. The road is also closed next week and on the weekends of 6 and 20 September.
