Video: 40-year-old dies in single-car crash on Hamelandroute in Aalten

A 40-year-old man from Aalten died in a single-car crash on the Hamelandroute near the German border during the night from Friday to Saturday. The Gelderland police confirmed the fatality Saturday morning. The Forensic Traffic Investigation team is examining the circumstances of the crash.

In a separate incident, on Saturday morning, a car went over a guardrail on the A16 near Breda and landed upside down against a pole. The driver was taken to the hospital.

On Thursday, two people were injured in a crash on the A16 near the Moerdijkbrug at Zevenbergschen Hoek, BN DeStem reports. The injured were a 27-year-old male driver and a 25-year-old female passenger, both from Romania. They were taken to the hospital. Police reported that no other vehicles were involved.

The car went off the highway and struck a tree. A witness called emergency services, and a trauma helicopter landed on the highway so a trauma doctor could assist the victims.

The car had license plates that did not belong to the vehicle, and nitrous oxide canisters were found in and around it. The driver has given a statement to police; the passenger has not.

A saliva test indicated the driver was not under the influence of drugs detectable by that test. It remains unknown whether nitrous oxide use contributed to the crash.
