Dutch border control catch graverobbers with urns, ornaments stolen from German cemetery
The Limburg Koninklijke Marechaussee’s cross-border team caught a pair of graverobbers when checking a German vehicle on the A67 near Venlo on Saturday morning. The suspects had several urns containing ashes and multiple grave ornaments in the trunk of their car, the Marechaussee reported on Instagram.
According to the Marechaussee, a policing force that works as part of the Dutch military and is responsible for border security, the driver and passenger of the car were unable to provide identification. So the Marechaussee officers decided to search the vehicle and found the loot in the trunk, along with “burglary tools.”
After a brief investigation, the German officer who forms part of the cross-border team determined that the items had been stolen from a cemetery in Germany, where some 100 graves had been vandalized.
“Because neither individual possessed any identification documents, they were denied entry into the Netherlands and handed over to the German authorities,” the Marechaussee said. The German police arrested them and are conducting further investigation.
