German suspect extradited in Rijswijk terrace murder; Two others remain at large
A German man has been extradited to the Netherlands in connection with a terrace shooting that killed a man in Rijswijk last year.
Cemil Önal, 41, was shot three times at close range on a crowded hotel terrace in May 2025. Dutch authorities later identified a 47-year-old man from Bergheim, west of Cologne, Germany, as a suspect.
The man was arrested in Germany on November 13 at the request of Dutch authorities and was extradited to the Netherlands earlier this week, according to the Public Prosecution Service.
Officials said the suspect is not accused of firing the fatal shots, and it remains unclear what role he played in the case. Two other suspects remain at large.
Önal had previously expressed fear for his life. His lawyer said he was at risk because of alleged connections to the Gülen movement, which the Turkish government considers a terrorist organization.
Turkish prosecutors had also accused Önal of involvement in a 2022 killing in the Turkish-controlled part of Cyprus, an allegation he has denied. Investigative platform Follow the Money reported that Önal had managed finances for the businessman killed in Cyprus.
