Two sentenced to nearly 12 years for fatal shooting at Purmerend station

Two men were sentenced to lengthy prison terms and a third received youth detention for their roles in a deadly shooting at Purmerend train station on the evening of February 12, 2024, which left a 19-year-old man dead and another severely injured.

The court found that the three, along with a fourth accomplice, traveled to Purmerend to confront a rival group. According to the NH, they were armed with a firearm and a knife and wore face masks. The confrontation escalated in a station tunnel, resulting in multiple gunshots.

The victim, a 19-year-old man from Purmerend, was shot and later died in the hospital. A second 19-year-old from Medemblik was seriously wounded, having been stabbed twice and struck by a bullet.

The 20-year-old Tayron D.M. from Amsterdam was identified as the shooter. He received the heaviest sentence of 11 years and 9 months in prison. The court noted that this sentence also covers his involvement in street robberies and other acts of public violence.

Marouane van E., 21, from Purmerend, was sentenced to 9 years and 10 months. He was convicted for participating in the killing, attempted killing, and separate acts of public violence. According to prosecutors, Van E. fired the first two shots before handing the weapon to D.M.

A 17-year-old from Amsterdam, who stabbed the injured victim, was sentenced to 264 days of youth detention and youth TBS psychiatric treatment. He was 15 at the time of the incident.

The fourth suspect, 20-year-old Seif O. from Belgium, received 270 days in prison, of which 170 were suspended, for kicking and hitting the injured victim. He has already served his pretrial detention but is required to participate in further treatment.

The court emphasized that the incident occurred in a public area during evening hours, exposing bystanders to violence. “This incident caused innocent people to be confronted with the consequences of the shooting. This reinforces feelings of insecurity in society,” the ruling stated.
