Windy and wet days ahead for Netherlands; Code yellow strong winds warning along coast

The Netherlands has two gusty and stormy days ahead, followed by changeable weather with periods of sunshine and showers for the rest of the week. The KNMI issued a code yellow warning for the coastal provinces on Monday and early Tuesday, warning of strong winds with gusts up to 90 kilometers per hour.

The code yellow warning is already in effect in Noord-Holland, the IJsselmeergebied, Friesland, and the Wadden Islands and will apply until 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Zeeland and Zuid-Holland will also have strong winds with gusts up to 90 kilometers per hour between 1:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on Monday, according to the meteorological institute.

Monday will be wet, with showers possibly turning into thunderstorms in some places, though the sun will show its face occasionally. Afternoon temperatures will climb to around 18 degrees, with a strong southwesterly wind. Overland, the wind will be fairly strong.

“Showers, possibly with thunderstorms, are expected tonight,” the KNMI said. Minimums will drop to around 13 degrees Celsius, with a southwesterly and moderate to strong wind inland, and westerly and strong wind in coastal areas.

Tuesday will be partly to mostly cloudy with plenty of showers, especially in the north and central regions. The strong winds will die down somewhat on Tuesday morning. The showers will lessen later in the afternoon, and maximums will climb to around 17 degrees.

For the rest of the week, the weather will be a mix of showers and sunny periods, with maximums in the high teens or low twenties. “From the weekend onwards, it will be temporarily drier, with more sunshine and slightly warmer temperatures of 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. Later in the weekend, the chance of rain or thunderstorms will increase,” the KNMI said.
