Police arrest dozens after Extinction Rebellion blocks A12 in The Hague

Police arrested dozens of climate activists Saturday after about 100 demonstrators from Extinction Rebellion occupied the A12 highway in The Hague at noon to demand an end to government subsidies for fossil fuels. The blockade was cleared from the A12 around 2 p.m.

Officers had warned the protesters to leave the roadway, saying they would otherwise be removed by force.

Many refused, and arrests quickly followed. The detained activists were placed onto buses parked on the A12.

By early afternoon, police said dozens had already been taken away, with more arrests expected. Police confirmed to ANP that the action was ongoing.
