Amsterdam man arrested in Diemen for alleged sexual assault after bystanders intervene
Police have arrested a 40-year-old man from Amsterdam suspected of attempting a sexual assault in Diemen early Saturday morning. The man was apprehended on the spot by two cyclists who intervened, according to authorities.
The incident occurred around 4 a.m. on the Zilvermeeuwpad near the underpass of Gooiseweg. The suspect allegedly harassed a woman walking alone at the location.
Two cyclists passing by noticed the situation, turned back and managed to subdue the suspect before handing him over to officers who arrived shortly afterward.
The suspect was transported to a detention facility, and police are investigating the case. Authorities have called on witnesses and anyone with relevant surveillance footage to come forward.
The arrest comes amid increased public attention to the safety of women and girls in public spaces, following the murder of 17-year-old Lisa in Duivendrecht last week. Lisa was fatally attacked while cycling home alone to Abcoude during the night.
