Oldest Netherlands-born man dies at age 111
Jan van Ierland, the oldest man ever born in the Netherlands, died peacefully in his sleep in Bloemendaal at the age of 111, his son Barend confirmed Monday on Facebook.
Born on May 5, 1914, in Tilburg, Van Ierland lived through two world wars and more than a century of societal change, yet remained a committed pacifist throughout his life. "In the 65 years of my life, there was never a harsh word exchanged between us," his son wrote in tribute.
Van Ierland’s life was marked by vitality and music. He began playing piano at age six and continued for 105 years. In a previous interview with Noordhollands Dagblad, he reflected on his philosophy: “I’m thankful every day that I’m alive and that I have people around me. People make life worthwhile.”
He celebrated his 110th birthday in 2024 surrounded by family and friends. Haarlem Mayor Jos Wienen visited him personally to mark the occasion.
Van Ierland attributed his longevity to “a drink, a walk, and good company.” He took daily walks through the dunes, drank a glass of port each day, and maintained an active interest in current events well into his final years.
According to his family, Van Ierland remained mentally sharp until the end. “He passed away peacefully,” his son said. “He lived 111 years without ever hurting anyone. That says everything about how he lived his life.”
Van Ierland earned the international title of “supercentenarian” in 2024, a designation for people aged 110 and older. He became the oldest man ever born in the Netherlands following the death of Eelke Bakker in 2020. At the time of his death, he was the second-oldest resident of the country. The oldest is John Huang, also 111, who was born in Vietnam.
