Amsterdam woman arrested in cold case murder from 30 years ago

A 68-year-old woman from Amsterdam was arrested on Tuesday in connection with a murder that took place 30 years ago. On March 7, 1995, a 57-year-old man was found dead in his home on Kijkduinstraat in Amsterdam-West, but until now, no one had ever been arrested in the case. The woman appeared before the examining magistrate on Thursday, who released her on medical grounds. She remains a suspect, according to the police.

A new DNA match led the police’s cold case team to the woman. She had been arrested in the past for a different murder case in February 1995 that bore similarities to the murder on Kijkduinstraat. A man had been found dead in a hotel on the Haarlemmerstraat in the city center in the same month. The woman was found guilty of theft but acquitted of murder.

The Netherlands Forensic Institute (NFI) still had trace evidence from both cases. The Public Prosecution Service asked the NFI to conduct DNA comparison tests on the blood traces found on the shoes seized in 1995 from the 68-year-old suspect and the DNA of the victim found in the home on Kijkduinstraat.

“That investigation recently resulted in a DNA match. This match, together with witness statements and other DNA evidence from the same suspect, ultimately led to the arrest of the 68-year-old woman,” the police said.
